The metallurgy department is one of the core research departments of Zijin Mining and Metallurgy Design and Research Institute/Xiamen Zijin Mining and Metallurgy Technology Co., Ltd., and the State Key Laboratory of Comprehensive Utilization of Low-Grade Refractory Gold Ores. There are 17 in-service scientific researchers, among which 14 researchers are with a Master degree and 4 researchers are senior engineers. There are laboratories with advanced facilities for bench-scale testing and continuous pilot testing in both hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy.


The metallurgy department mainly focuses on common difficult problems in the industry associated with gold, copper, zinc and rare and precious metals, such as extraction of low-grade, refractory and co-associated metals. Research and development on pressure oxidation, biological oxidation, roasting oxidation, chemical oxidation, gold extraction with and without cyanide, copper hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, harmless disposal of arsenic during smelting have been carried out. Diagnosis and optimization of the production process as well as the collaborating service for the establishment of mine site in-situ laboratory are also included. 


The metallurgy department provides full range of technical services in terms of investment and construction, technological reformation, improvement of quality and quantity, cost reduction and efficiency increase for mining enterprises.


As per the policy of “Science and Technology Create Zijin”, the metallurgy department has made significant contributions for Zijin Mining Group Co. to become a world-class mining company with its technical support. Meanwhile it actively cooperates with domestic and overseas companies and participated in their projects along the ‘One Belt and One Road”.
The department has undertaken more than 200 scientific research projects which have been successfully applied to industrial practice, resulting in 7 first prizes, 5 second prizes and 3 third prizes of scientific and technological progress awards in provincial and ministerial level, 1 first prize of Xiamen municipal science and technology award, 1 second prize of Xiamen municipal patent.


The department has applied for 32 invention patents with 18 patents authorized, and published more than 40 papers in international journals such as Hydrometallurgy, Rare Metal Materials and Engineering, Minerals Engineering, Rare Metals, Non-Ferrous Metals, Mining and Metallurgical Engineering.

1. Research direction:

(1)Process development of pressure oxidation
①Extraction of refractory gold ore /concentrate and recovery of co-associated metals;
②Recovery of laterite-nickel ore and nonferrous metal (i.e. copper, zinc);
③Hot-pressing of arsenic fixation ;
④Development of key supporting equipment;
⑤Comprehensive technical service for process industrialization .

(2)Detoxification and recovery of arsenic
①New process development of arsenic fixation from waste acid;
②Development of the non-hazardous process to recover arsenic-containing intermediate smelting products ;
③Process development of pyrometallurgical arsenic fixation from arsenic-bearing materials;
④Development of key supporting equipment;
⑤Comprehensive technical service for process industrialization.

(3)Process development of bio-hydrometallurgy
①Extraction of refractory gold ore /concentrate;
②Extraction of low-grade copper ores;
③Development of key supporting equipment;
④Comprehensive technical service for process industrialization.

(4)Process optimization and development of pyrometallurgy
①Analysis on physical properties of smelting slag and optimization study on slag phase;
②Optimization study on roasting process;
③Process optimization and development of oxidation/reduction smelting .

(5)Clean production and high-value utilization of scattered and precious metals
①Novel process development for clean production of Au, Ag, Pt, Pd, Se. Te, Pb, Bi, Re and Co;
②Advanced purification of copper and its associated precious metals;
③Comprehensive utilization of associated secondary resources from copper and zinc smelting;
④Development of key supporting equipment;
⑤Comprehensive technical service for process industrialization.

(6)Process development of copper hydrometallurgy
①Optimization of leaching process and recovery of associated metals;
②Process optimization on impurities removal ;
③Optimization study on solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) process;
④Development of key supporting equipment;
⑤Comprehensive technical service for process industrialization.

(7)Plant survey and optimization of process flowsheet
①Diagnosis, discovery and analysis of problems in operation flowsheet;
②Process optimization, conduction of relevant tests and enhancement of technical parameters.
