Zijin Mining has recently introduced its first Biodiversity Conservation Guidelines. This landmark document identifies potential biodiversity impacts across the lifecycle of mining activities, and outlines four conservation measures—avoidance, mitigation, restoration, and compensation—each tailored to the specific phases of exploration, engineering and construction, operations, and closure. With this approach, Zijin Mining reinforces its commitment to protecting biodiversity at every stage of its business.
At the Zijinshan Gold and Copper Mine, the company’s birthplace, we restore the environment while developing the mine. The approach allows for ongoing ecological restoration and biodiversity recovery throughout the entire mine development process.
For gold-mining areas, we achieve rapid ecological and biodiversity recovery with an innovative combination of engineering and planting optimization strategies, including layered water management, slope stabilization, soil improvement, and careful plant selection. As a result, many former mining sites have turned into vibrant green spaces, such as the Main Monument Park, the Yitianmen Botanical Garden, the Flower and Fruit Garden, and the Tea Garden. They are now cherished as the most beautiful landscapes at the Zijinshan Gold and Copper Mine.
To support local wildlife conservation, bird nests are installed in the Main Monument Park, Botanical Garden, Riverside Park, and roadside green areas, providing habitats for birds. We also guide and release wild animals that stray into human activity zones safely back to their habitats.
The Aurora Gold Mine in Guyana, another Zijin operation, follows similar conservation principles. The mine is located in the northeastern Amazon rainforest on the Guiana Shield, one of the world’s most biodiverse areas. To minimize biodiversity impacts, AGM conducts regular biodiversity surveys, engaging independent experts every two years for thorough assessments. It also installs camera traps throughout the site to monitor various animal populations and their activity ranges, with adjustments made based on migration patterns to ensure effective and ongoing conservation efforts.
